What Does It Mean for You?
EPA
Tier IV Standard
What is Tier IV?
All US regulated emission
standards, including Tier IV
for off-road diesel engines,
are extensions of the "Clean
Air Act" of 1963. The
"tiered" mandates were put
into place to progressively
reduce the level of harmful
emissions that go into the
air via diesel engine
exhaust.
How Does Tier IV Affect
Manufacturers like Jacobsen?
Since compliance with the
Federal Regulation, EPA Tier
IV, is mandatory, Jacobsen
and other manufacturers we
carry have been proactively
working to be in compliance.
Jacobsen has been working
over the past decade with
its engineers and component
suppliers to incorporate the
EPA Tier IV Regulations as
seamlessly as possible.
How Does the EPA Tier IV
Standard Affect You?
To become Tier IV compliant,
there is significant cost in
design, manufacturing and
component costs. It is
challenging to deliver the
quality redesigned product
and offset the cost
increases. The bottom
line is that
all Tier IV compliant diesel
powered machines
manufactured in 2013 will be
significantly more
expensive.
Jacobsen has been investing
in developing alternative
fuel options as well as
compliant diesel engines.
What are Your Options?
-
Purchase new equipment
in 2012, in advance of
the mandatory Tier IV
standards,
and take advantage of
the lower prices. Let
your membership and/or
decision makers know
that equipment prices
will rise significantly
in 2013.
-
Purchase on a Regular
Routine and
pay market price.
When a Capital equipment
plan calls for new
equipment and/or
existing equipment
useful life ends, buy
what is available and
pay market price.
-
Purchase environmentally
friendly:
Despite expected higher
prices, actively seek
out, purchase, and
market that your
facility is "green"
-
In 2013 and beyond, you
could
purchase Used Equipment
(anything manufactured
prior to 2013 does not
have to be Tier IV
Compliant)

And the Winner Is. . .
The Ken Bard Cup Competition
is Revived
After skipping the past two
years, the Mountain and
Valley GCSA revived their
annual January meeting at
Pike Run Country Club.
The morning began with a
trap and skeet shooting
competition for the Ken Bard
Cup followed by a delicious
lunch at the clubhouse.
The January Pike Run meeting
began over 15 years ago by
Rick Kanuch, former golf
course superintendent, and
the Ken Bard Cup was
instituted in 2003 because
of Ken’s interest in
shooting and his friendship
with Rick. Mark Hollick and
Mike Nati decided to revive
the event since they were
two of Ken Bard’s closest
friends.

The weather this year was
pretty mild compared to some
of the conditions in years
past, and attendance was
good with 18 shooters and a
total of 25 for lunch. This
year’s winner was Tim
Fitzgerald from Krigger &
Company, who also won in
2008. None of the other past
winners were able to make
the meeting. Second and
third place went to Brad
Turk from Golf Car Supply
and Keith Perl from Walker
Supply, respectively.
Mountain & Valley GCSA
members should mark their
calendar next year and plan
for this meeting which is
held on Martin Luther King,
Jr. Day each January.
